2025-26 Hornets own free agency

Thread for specific discussion around our free agents. Today, that stands at:
Tre Mann (RFA)
Seth Curry (UFA)
Taj Gibson (UFA)
Wendell Moore (RFA)

technically …
Micic (Team Option - executed to make the Mark Williams trade money work)

On Tre Mann from our (@powellrmp and my) other discussion in the Williams’ thread:

On Tre, I had this wild thought he was worth a fair bit more than what I am reading he will command. I have heard 2x now that he might be getting interest near that QO rather than the MLE. That blows me away considering that 9-game burst we saw of him last year. But that’s kinda the issue, it was only 9 games and he otherwise doesn’t have any resume to command a higher salary. Probably going to push this part to another thread as I am very interested in where folks think this goes.

What do you guys think? Will we actually prioritize re-signing him? Peterson is showing his hand (though I do believe that is a way of saying we’ll re-sign but you’ll have to accept)

Mann’s contract has been a real mystery for me as well. I really don’t know how to judge it. There’s a wide range in my mind and you can argue for either extreme. 5/6m on the low end and 10-12m on the high end. With the severity of the back stuff it’s hard to imagine the upper end.

I honestly have no idea

I like tre mann but he has all the hallmarks of a “he’s our guy so we have to sign him” Charlotte horncats MO.

I like him at the bare minimum salary, nothing more.

I am thoroughly confused too. I like the prove-it Jeremy Lamb contract but man, it’s crazy to think that prove-it deal at 3y $21m would be the same number I would use today on Mann. If he pops, we never keep him on the next contract. If he doesn’t pop and we spend closer to the MLE, that’s a lot of waste.

If we let Tre go, we’ll have to get a legitimate pg2. Unless they’re really high on KJ. No way we can start the season without a backup plan at PG with LaMelo’s injury history.

Very true TN, we have a year’s worth of proof that isn’t NSJ however much as I wanted it to be the case. Right? We don’t think NSJ has any lead-guard capabilities at this point, do we?

If they want to get serious they need to start building actual veteran infrastructure to reduce melo’s usage and try to keep his glass body from shattering.

They need to get a quality pf and center rotation to protect the team from injury from having to play out of position.

The frontcourt is probably the worst in the league right now. There is no backup ph that isn’t a combo guard.

This roster is a hot mess

Chef, you’re worrying too much about PG. We have a backup for Melo. Tre Mann, the guy who missed the entire season with a serious back thing. No problemo!

Don’t think of any of this hasn’t been posted yet, but here’s where I’m at:

I too think the draft effectively said that FO wants to build around Ball and Miller, and that they want to make the game easier for those guys and our other young players, hence drafting Kon. I ain’t mad at it. Liam looks like a guy that can play similarly to Kon off the bench, which really gives us the opportunity to build a cohesive team that makes sense.

As far as PG goes, I’d love to have a cheap but solid vet brought in for a year. I think that type of player can do wonders for a team like ours trying to establish ourselves. I think Miller needs to be able to focus more on finding his spots and playing effective basketball for who he is. Having a blue collar PG that can keep the offense going and find him in those spots could be helpful.

Obviously, we need another C. Very curious if we address that through draft, trade, or FA. But like Chef said, we need to find a legit C and not keep playing guys out of position where they’re doing things they’re not accustomed to doing, leading to both ineffective play and potential energy.

At this moment in the off season, I feel ok. Looks like we can get at least one more contributor tonight. We’ll see.

This all feels very optimistic. The fact that you guys see this as an effort to continue to build around Melo and Miller is assuring.

I think that’s the general take in the local market. The sense here (and with a few national pods) feel that it’s giving Melo and Miller the tools they need to succeed. It’s definitely a vote of confidence in those two, not otherwise.

I’ve never been great at assessing what FMV is for most guys so I’m similarly confused by Tre’s situation. Obviously whatever he ends up getting will be skewed by his lack of availability last season (and rightly so), but it’s hard to imagine him being a near minimum salary guy if people truly think he’s healthy now. Though his sample size was small, I think we’ve still seen enough high level play from him over the past couple of seasons to confidently say it isn’t a fluke as long as he’s healthy.

I too think the front office wants to see what a LaMelo & Miller headlined roster can do this coming season. That said, neither Kon nor Liam are ‘LaMiller’ fit specific players. They’re simply high BBIQ, team first players who can dribble (a bit), pass well and shoot very well (Liam’s history points towards this being accurate). I’m not a fan of Kon’s value at #4, to be fair that would have been the case with anyone at #4 in this draft, but I know he cares. I know he will play for the team and not himself. I am also very confident that he’ll find space so LaMelo can kick it out to him, which will in turn (hopefully) improve LaMelo’s at the rim efficiency. If LaMelo is driving, and he has Kon, Miller & Miles to kick it out to, that has to take some defensive attention/pressure off him.

Today at 5p is the deadline for issuing a QO to Tre if I am following correctly.

I’m super interested to see what kind of contract tre Mann ends up with. If it’s halfway affordable, I’d really hope it’s with the hornets

Edit: I’m seeing it would be a 6.96m QO

As I understand, today is the last day to extend a qualifying offer to a player. Any news on if one has been extended to Tre?

Nothing yet. But it would have to be in by 5p. We’ll know by morning if it was tendered or not.

Feeling the same way in this, hope I’m wrong but fear I’m not.
