Live look in of the Hornet’s 3rd quarter:
Any reason why the game isn’t coming up on the direct TV guide on sportssouth?
It would actually be relieving if they quit showing games.
I thought about going to go to the game but I decided against it.
It’s hard to watch the games last night and the one prior and think Clifford isn’t at a huck stuff at the wall phase with his rotations. I wonder if he’s feeling some internal pressure.
I think internal pressure is the right word. But I think the internal pressure is coming from him. I could definitely see him doubting his competency in his chosen profession. The last 3 weeks it seems like the train has jumped the rails.
My favorite was subbing out miller as soon as we take a lead with 5:00 remaining in the 2nd. And then Cliff trying to get miller right back in a minute or so later.
Bizarre.
I watched the game and then the extended highlights this morning. And yes, Cody Martin was even worse than I thought. Especially on the defensive end.
The most frustrating thing was this was such a very winnable game, where we were actually controlling the game, and gave it right back.
End of second quarter, built up a 10 point lead and had great energy, were playing hard. At that point, you’re in a good spot, take the air out of the ball, manage the lead and carry it into halftime, and you have a good 8-10 point buffer for the start of the second half.
Yes, we don’t have a true point guard, Cody’s not it. My brother’s hated on the twins since they were at NC State, said they had no basketball IQ and hunted their own shots there. While better now, there is a severe lack of offensive awareness from the defensive twin we chose to keep.
But Cliff should know his personnel, take it out of Cody’s hands, don’t let him be a decision maker at all. Either bring in Ish, an actual point guard who knows the game and could protect the ball, or you know, give it to Miller to be the primary handler, he knows pace and how not to force anything. But of course he was benched for those crucial minutes.
10 points quickly became just a 2 point lead. Psychologically its so much easier for opponents, the momentum is on your side, a bucket or two takes the lead and now control is lost. Cliff lost it right there. The margins are where games are won or lost. End of quarter management is Cliff’s biggest weakness, either on offense (inbounding and final shots) or defense (buzzer beaters).
Those few minutes could’ve set the tone across halftime, we could’ve kept control of the game, and we maybe could’ve had a double digit win.
Cody just doesn’t seem like the same guy since coming back from the injury. Two years ago he was an above average defender who had developed a respectable offensive game attacking the rim, making mid-range Js and even an occasional 3. Now he appears far less disciplined defensively and is terribly inefficient on the offensive end. Maybe he’s still working his way back into shape. I know being out for a whole year due to an injury is much different even than Miles’ situation where he was just out, but not physically limited. But we definitely need the 2021-22 version of Cody back.
Cold take: the 21-22 version of Cody wasn’t really that good and he is back to rookie Cody Martin levels which is a bad player
I guess you can define “good” a lot of different ways. I think 21-22 Cody was a guy who wasn’t elite at any one thing, but did a lot of things well that contributed to winning. The same can’t be said this year, but it could be said then.
I was a huge critic of the martins for a long time; however; that last season before Cody’s injury did show that he can be a good 7/8th man on the roster. He was never a good defender, but he had a good motor. Wasnt a great athlete, but was sneaky athletic out of nowhere. And his shooting had improved, which was the big thing.
