Hot d@mn!!!
That is the answer and THAT is the reason why he was in a third/fourth tier. And that is the reason why selecting him fourth overall garnered such a harsh response. (Not to mention that we could have traded back to get him.)
Anyway, Kon fits and he is capable so hopefully he is also special not necessarily spectacular but at least special.
We had a Melo video of Melo welcoming Miller. Any such video from any player welcoming Kon?
How do any of us know we could have traded back to get him? Sure speculation said maybe that was possible. But we know for a fact Utah was reportedly high on him. We might not have even gotten a single offer. You simply cannot take all the smoke in the run up to the draft as fact.
Rumor is we had talks with WAS to move back to 6 as they wanted Ace but we had intel that Utah was going to take Kon at 5. And we really wanted Kon. If that’s real, we made the right move 100%.
Tre is a cool pick, but I can see why he’s a worry for our FO when he’s never shown defensive want and we have a dearth of defense now.
I would have traded back to 6 and, in the instance that Kon and Ace were gone, taken Tre and not thought twice about it (assuming the trade back package was acceptable). But that’s mainly because I didn’t see any player that stood out as being THE pick at #4.
But, it’s clear the front office has a type they were after in this draft. As such, I’m okay with Kon at #4, but extremely happy with Liam and Ryan where they were picked, and happy with Sion. That’s 4 high BBIQ dudes who play team ball. Hard to fault the draft, really.
B+ from me.
If they had of traded back to 6, picked up additional assets and drafted Tre, rather than stand pat and draft Kon, it would be an easy A.
Crazy talk, twitter told me we could have traded from 4 to 6 and gotten two future first round picks!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Oh boy. That is exactly the kind of fuel that would have caused a riot on this board on draft night! Hopefully it’s not true.
If it was Danny Ainge, he would’ve claimed he offered five 1st round picks and the parental rights of his next two grandkids, but the Hornets decided to stomp on puppies and turn off the AC at all the retirement homes before slamming the phone shut on him.
And then the national media narrative will say, “oh those stupid, hapless Charlotte hornets.”
In reality, it’s our own history of incompetence that provides the extensive cannon fodder for those national narratives. So here’s to hoping we start being collectively smarter as an organization, and tbh, I am not sure that means being bold per se.
Kon first workout - love the first cut is Kemba working him on dribble drills.
Meanwhile the player many of our fans wanted over Kon has yet to report to the team that drafted him.
And for all of my complaints that the organization has not done enough to support and promote Melo, I forgot that they added Kemba last year. That is A LOT cheaper than paying Mike Conley Jr. or Malcolm Brogdon millions to take up a roster spot.
I am going to post this here because Kon is the lead guy:
Someone mentioned Kon and culture change on the 1st round draft pick thread. Well that was the exact message communicated to all four selections. They were all told that they are expected to help bring about culture change.
This draft class for Hornets could be generational IMO, exact opposite of 2021 draft.
Do I think any of these four could be an all-star/superstar, probably not. Could they be SOLID players that would contribute to a playoff team, yes.
Really impressed with these guys.
Question came up about us drafting four guys. I think now that was clearly intentional to bring in a group of guys who have similar approaches to the game so that they can make a cultural impact. Lee and Peterson both really hammered the idea of culture, winning basketball, and IQ.
When Lee gets the question about these guys opening up the playbook, he starts beaming. Thought that was very interesting. @Chef echoes your thoughts about drafting clear, tangible skill sets that should directly translate to better basketball.
The Wrath of Kon is coming!
The more I watch him, the more he seems like a spiritual love child of Desmond Bane and Klay Thompson. Might not peak at either of their peak levels but he’s got the tools to do so.
I didn’t love the pick at the time, bc I felt 4 was too high for him. But after a the last few days and listening to his interviews, I’m fine with it. You can definitely tell the clear direction we are going in. I wanted Ace, but he definitely would have been a headache.
