Kon Knueppel Thread

Yeah I’m definitely not putting too much stock into summer league. I’m just stoked to see us have four guys (5 including Salaun) playing out there. Players that we’re all reasonably interested/excited about.

Just based off those highlights, it looked like a classic case of shot not falling and new guy trying to press a little too much.

Currently, no worries.

Yeah, a college 91.4% free throw shooter went 3 for 6 from the line. Can’t take it too seriously.

Looking at the “highlight” clip helped reinforce what I saw.

Kon is a very heady, methodical player, and is used to being bigger and stronger than his position, with enough juice to keep up athletically, but more so using knowledge of angles, leverage, and playing harder.

This game seemed to me like he’s getting used to the new speed of the game. The closeout speed on a couple of 3s seemed to catch him off guard, but its an easy adjustment. Pump fake, escape dribble, or hard jab to the lane with a step back.

The couple blow bys by Collier seemed to catch him off guard because Collier is so stocky, doesn’t look like he should move that quick. So a quick lesson to Kon, everyone can move. No easy covers.

The turnover to Salaun in the corner was just misreading the defense, NBA is trained to cover the corners so he coulda kicked to KJ at the top instead. The jump pass turnover against flip, he gathered to quick, if he had kept his dribble alive, he could’ve maneuvered the annoying dookie out the way for a better midrange or good drive. And the layup block on flip, he could’ve gotten the ball up quicker, or thrown a good pump fake, since he seems to want to go for the block on everything.

He definitely was pressing too much, didn’t really get his feet set on his shots like normal. But he’s smart, I’m sure they’ll point this out on film and make the adjustments, how to find his spots better. And if he’s as competitive as they say, this game will have been burning him up all night, and he’ll come out more focused and more fired up tonight.

And that’s QC’s Cope of the Day!

So should we be impressed that a guy who’s 6’5” can dunk? I’m sorry but this feels like a reach. The questions around his athleticism and how that translates to the defensive end are fair, and we saw evidence of that last night.

Look, a lot of us on here wanted Kon and a lot of us didn’t. It’s only natural to allow what we saw or didn’t see to reinforce what we initially thought about him. If you liked the pick it’s natural that you’ll look for the positive and give him grace for the negatives. If you didn’t like the pick, likewise, there was plenty of negative to harp on. But as long as we agree that one game or even the entire SL neither makes him great nor terrible, I think all these critiques are fair. We’re going to react to what we see game by game, just like we do during the regular season. And what we saw in game 1 wasn’t great. Doesn’t mean he can’t be, but it’s all we have to go on right now. Let’s hope he bounces back and gives us something more positive to talk about tonight.

Simply saying that even a questionable NBA athlete looks fairly impressive from the lower seats. Also, he jumped off both feet for a two handed dunk from beyond the charge circle. Not bad.

If you want my honest opinion I think it’s an issue of questionable length with Kon. The guy can jump high from the standing position, as evidenced by his combine numbers. As far as reaction time, he’s likely a bit ground bound by that weight. There might come a time where he needs to look at losing some weight and thinking of himself more like a combo guard than a 2/3 wing.

I personally don’t have a strong opinion about who we should have drafted. I’ve been through enough of these to know that I don’t know squat about the future of these guys. But I am hoping for the best and trying to see a few of the positives in Kon. As I’ve said before, the best way I can spin him is “Chris Mullin with Mitch Richmond’s strength.” Just wanting to be entertained.

Yeah, I’m like PLEASE let him be Thunder Dan.
