Well, I’d say you have an “interesting” way of not wanting to stir something up. As you said, there were several people on here who had takes similar to mine re Ace and Kon. So then why not just make a general comment? Instead, you made specific reference to me. That feels personal. Not sure how else to take that other than as a call out. I think most people likely would’ve taken it that way. I don’t want to have bad blood with you or anyone else on here so if you say that wasn’t your aim, I’ll assume best intentions. But if you were truly just trying to engage in conversation around the difficulties of predicting player performance, that was a pretty clumsy approach.
No secret I 100% agreed about taking Ace and feeling that he has the higher upside. I felt about as strong about him over Kon as I did about Brandon over Scoot. I’m definitely pleased with Kon’s early impact but it was completely predictable that he would have a more immediate impact than Ace. In fact I’m pretty certain I said as much during the draft debates. I think the Howard vs Okafor comparison is a great analogy. Like I felt confident that Kon would at least be a solid pro for many years (again I’m pleased to see it manifesting so fast) but I felt like Ace has undeniable potential to be a game changing player and you just don’t get many opportunities to bring that type of player into your organization once they have already demonstrated that they are THAT. For us, we have to somehow be visionaries and get them early. So this was a unique opportunity and I still stand on that.
And another reason I felt it was important is because as much as I love Brandon and Melo, many still question if we have true star players to build around. Some have questioned their talent. For me, that question was not of their talent but their availability. And that is rearing its head again. So this was another bite at the superstar talent apple.
But I do love what Kon and all the rookies have brought thus far. If we could get some injury/health fortune with Brandon and Melo (which appears impossible) I believe we could really do something this year.
