Ok listen. His summer league convinced me he was going to be a good player in the league, not just his play, but his demeanor and intangibles. So I was not one of his doubters.
But I thought we were looking at “complimentary all-star” at best comparables like Desmond Bane or young Klay Thompson. How was I to know we were getting Chris Mullin reincarnated?
And you know what, I don’t even want to limit him there. To regularly score into the upper 20s, whether with Melo and Miller or without. Whether lower on the scouting report or the #1 focus. Being close to the 50/40/90 AS A ROOKIE. Smashing the 3 point made to start a career for a rookie. Taking the lead in the rookie of the year race in a really good class, and have it not even debatable at this point anymore.
Honestly, have we even seen anything like this before. Not just a great expected rookie like the superstars, but one of the high floor/low ceiling guys busting through the ceiling to take the league by storm?
I now get bothered whenever he’s not in the game, and start getting upset he doesn’t take more shots. The ball pretty much should touch his hands every possession. He’s unselfish enough to not take every shot, I just trust him to make the right read or keep the ball moving.
We finally get dumb luck with something, Kon will break the curse of Hornets Law. I’m a Knueppeler.

Can you imagine how even more depressing this season would be if Kon wasn’t playing well? And he looked like a shaky draft pick?
Whew. At least we can hang our hats on Kon being a stud. He’s so crafty with the ball on the dribble, as a facilitative passer, and finds ways to use his size and dribble to attack the basket. When his defenders start to press him, Kon can use his dribble and size to attack. Thank god.
I want to take a look at the analytics and advanced stats for him. Particularly his efficiency close to the basket when he drives. That’s a cmon issue for younger guys to struggle finishing close to the rim. I haven’t really seen that as much of an issue for Kon. But need to see the stats.
Also: Coach Lee. Please seek help in how to run the offense. Take a page out of the OKC playbook and run a shit ton of two guard pick and rolls.
Rum horns action with Kon and a rim runner to set back screens to confuse defenses with either the cut to the basket or the pick and pop. Shit man, why isn’t Kalk shooting any threes…at all?? He would be devastating on the pick and pop three-Lopez style.

as you all know, I’ve been calling for him to be traded for three straight years.
I expect us to have a top five pick this year and I expect us to make a major deal before the trade deadline. I would’ve bet my house that had happened before the start of the season.
I’ve been meaning to ask, was Melo part of the big deal you were hearing rumblings about?
With Kon looking like an actual foundational piece, I can definitely see the calculus moving forward with making a big splash. Shoot for the lottery, create a core of Kon/Miller/(Boozer, Caleb, or AJ), and move Melo for either a serious, professional, high impact veteran (+ picks), or go for a couple higher value 1st rounders and a young prospect.
At this point, the roster is too stuck in the mud not to make a significant move for the present and future. This may be the cleanest and easiest way to do it.

I understand that right now, LaMelo’s value is probably taking a bad contract back or a change of scenery guy. But no way do I want anywhere near Ja right now.

Basically every single statistic shows that the Hornets are significantly better with LaMelo on the floor. Even Kon plays better when LaMelo is on the floor with him.
LaMelo also spends a significant portion of the offseason every year in Charlotte, that doesn’t scream someone who has wanted out of here since the moment he got here.
I don’t think it’s a Charlotte (City) thing, it’s a small market thing.
He is just biding his time. I expect this to be his final contract with us and I also expect that he may not be here for the duration of that contract.
This Cup game Friday will tell us a good deal about the intentions of the team and front office. The season can still be salvaged but it’s on life support…
