"Neva' Lost" LaMelo Ball Thread

Melo is not a generational talent. He isn’t even the best player in his draft class

And yet he is the MOST talented player that this franchise has ever had dating back to 1988. And he is 23.

Bobcats>Hornets? Maybe. Since 1988? There’s a lot of very talented players on that list.

Yeah, not seen anyone yet that reached the level of Glen Rice as far as I am concerned. I think Brandon is best suited to take that torch but he’s way far away from getting to MVP level anything.

I didn’t say Lamelo has peaked higher than Rice yet but what I am saying is that he is an overall more talented player. I do get your point.

I think it’s fair to say that he has as much potential as anyone who’s every played in a Hornets/Bobcats jersey and could possibly be one of the best players in the NBA. But he has a long way to go to arrive at that, and we need to have some plans in place to contend with the fact that he might not be the guy to get us to the next level. NBA history is filled with guys who had incredible talent but just couldn’t bring it all together for whatever reason.

Talent is such a hard thing to quantify. If there was a Hornets/Bobcats Mt. Rushmore, Zo, Kemba and Rice would likely occupy three of the spots and you could certainly make an argument for Lamelo to have the fourth. I think what makes it harder for Lamelo in comparison with the other three is that Lamelo is perceived as an unserious player. But of course, that wouldn’t mean nearly as much if we had won with him. Even though we were mostly bad with Kemba, we did at least make the playoffs a couple of times with him and we also were a playoff team during the Zo and Rice eras. No one can deny Lamelo’s talent, but until he at least makes the playoffs, he’ll probably never be viewed as better than those guys, and I’m not sure he should be.

No Chris Paul? No Grandmama?

I have mentally blocked out the entire New Orleans Hornets era as a protective response to the trauma of losing the Hornets. An argument could definitely be made for LJ.

ha! I didn’t even mean Chris Paul, although I would include him in the conversation.

Meant Baron Davis.

Talent is a tough one but I will say I think Lamelo is the most talented player in our franchise. Which is why I don’t want to trade him away… unless we can guarantee to get a player with his upside.

Generational may be a bit of an exaggerated but without question imo LaMelo has elite size and passing ability for his position.

LaMelo playing the season with G-Leaguers all around him still ranks as one of the best playmakers in the league.

Im not even going to weigh in on the talent discussion. Until he stops missing games, it’s all a moot point. I ere towards Melo being more talented than given credit for. But you know, we can’t really say for sure until he plays. I hope he stays healthy for two consecutive seasons so we can actually have some real data to work with.

Make that money!

I am documenting this here because it is brilliant. Also, it is the first day of the season and Melo is leading the team. My hopes are high.

Good article in the CO about LaMelo’s improved maturity.

Who’s going to volunteer to be LaMelo’s chauffeur? Apparently, no injuries except to the vehicles involved.

Edit: another video

“Melo, what happened, who was at fault?”

“Uh, okay. How fast were you going?”

“…you were going 67 miles per hour?”
