2023-24 Hornets General Discussion Thread

Latter, thank you. If it was a championship, I would take that, but Finals loss, no thank you.

Unhelpful sports forum answer: Yes to both. But I like the question and I do get what you’re getting at.

It’s a great philosophical conversation as this franchise is at an interesting position. Do we use our cap space and assets to add in the short term? Or so we play the long game given the age of our core pieces? (At least I think that’s what you’re getting at)

I with a healthy Melo, Miller, Mark Williams, and new solid NBA depth players-i have a hard time seeing this hornets team produce bad seasons. May not be incredible seasons, but above and beyond what’s happening. I really believe the last two games are a clear indicator of that.

I am getting some ā€˜Major League’ vibes here…Steve Clifford as the old manager makes too much sense. Lol

I’ve been on the same wavelength as you for the past few years, wanting us to completely reset. The issue now is, and I find this very weird to write, we have too many competent NBA players. With the likes of Miller & Grant, we have two-way guys who compete hard, want to win and will ensure the rest of the roster does too.

Now, I’m completely against making a win now free agent signing just as I was completely against signing Hayward, for much the same reason … too soon.

That said, I’d still want our focus to be on development. An example being I really want us to have Curry on the roster next season, but I don’t want him blocking NSJ or Mann from regular rotation minutes.

This roster, with no first round pick or external free agents added is too good, too well balanced, to not be a 500 team … unless we’re cursed with injuries again. LaMelo, Micic, Mann; NSJ, Curry, Bailey; Miller, Cody, Bryce; Miles, Grant, Thor; Williams, Richards, Nnaji.

With sensible additions, stretch 5 and a starting SG, we’re a play-in team next year, comfortably.

It’s kind of a win-win. Both scenarios have their qualities. I’m ready for entertaining wins at the arena and establishing winning culture, but another season of injuries resulting in Cooper Flagg(or someone who turns out better) ain’t the worst thing either. As a Bobcats fan I got used to patience and tanking for sure.

Plus, this would be the year to give that 1st to SAN. To make this playin, catching CHI or ATL is the only chance. CHI is 26-29 and are 5-5 last 10. ATL is 24-31 and 6-4 L10. If both play .500 rest of the season, CHI will finish with around 39 wins, ATL around 37. To get to 37 wins, the Hornets will need to go 24-4 the rest of the way. That’s a historic turnaround I’m sure. Unlikely, but the fact we can even entertain the thought is awesome and a bit unbelievable. GO HORNETS!

Or if we miss the playoffs again next year we never have to give the 1st to anyone

That’s not going to happen. Indy is mediocre at best. Zero defense. Memphis is terrible and Atlanta is basically your normal Charlotte team. Just good enough to not get high picks.

Charlotte is much improved but still not a seriously good basketball team.

I’m really happy for Cliff. To actually have a full rotation of NBA calibre players who communicate and take what he says out onto the court must be such a joy and relief for him. We still need to look elsewhere for a better in game HC, no doubt, but it’s great to see him enjoying himself.

At this rate, Steve will be looking like this at the end of the year after our 30 game win streak.

I still think it’s probably time for Cliff to move on to continue the reset; however, if this team finishes this season playing the brand of strong, cohesive basketball I wouldn’t be completely against Cliff staying. I’ve been a strong proponent of reseting this roster for nearly two years, and it’s validating to see a completely different level of basketball being played post trades. You can’t ignore what’s happening. The offense, but particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

If the team continues to play like this, keeping Cliff would not be the worst thing in the world. The startling contrast in basketball from then to now has to give one pause. Not that Cliff is blameless in all of this-he definitely frustrates me. Let’s see what happens when we get Melo and Mark back, and start playing against good teams.

When it appeared the three players the Hornets needed to focus on for their future were Melo, Miller and Mark I was going with a 3M nickname… NOW? We have so many M’s… These Hornets are MMM MMM good!

Melo
Miller
Mark (Williams)
Mann
Miles (Bridges)
Micic
Martin
McGowen

I don’t see any reason to worry about us winning games, we’re winning with young players (under 26) and unproven players primarily. Isn’t this what we’d want? Guys like Tre Mann and Brandon Miller winning us games? Learning how to compete and win at a high level
