2023-24 Hornets General Discussion Thread

If you played youth to high school sports (and I am assuming most of us on here did) you knew there were two types of kids. One type that was always hurt. They came by it honestly and often they weren’t the same injury. They seemed to be always out with a twisted ankle then a wrist then a shoulder etc. Oddly enough they were always good too. Just kinda made of glass.

Then there were the rest, who although got nicked up in much the same way but never really missed any time.

Melo very much seems to be the former. Williams is getting there too. Some bodies are built to be athletes but they just can’t handle the regular grind of it.

Steph Curry had ankle issues and got it figured out I have faith in Lamelo but I understand the fear of it

Repeating an incorrect statement doesn’t make it true

??? The last few years werent ankles

Over the last 3 games the hornets are #5 in net rating. Yowza what a difference.

You are smarter than that.

I was talking about Curry Chef

Coach Clifford is staying!

Yeah, that’s definitely what I was getting at. Obviously anyone can land awkwardly or get landed on. But some guys’ bodies just respond differently to the same stress. Maybe it’s nothing more than mere coincidence, but it is interesting to note the struggles both Ball bothers have had with their susceptibility to and recovery from injury.

Well guys, that’s four in a row. When was the last time we won four in a row??

Nevermind, it was oddly enough last year around this time. Between 2/13-2/27. Won 5 games in a row. On to GS Friday.

I know. Curry, on this forum, has somehow been married to this narrative that he was injury plagued early in his career when the games played doesn’t support it. He basically missed 1 season in his first 7 and another 30 games by season 9. So 1.5 seasons in his first 9. In the stretch he also probably averaged another 20+ games of playoff basketball for most of them.

He isn’t injury prone. He had an ankle injury or two but continued to play.

That’s why I put melo’s games played log up. In 4 seasons (assuming he doesn’t play much the rest of this year) he will miss somewhere between 120-130 games over 4 seasons. He is barely averaging 60% attendance. This isn’t one season, this is 3 out of 4.

This isn’t just a case of bad luck. Melo either is very very very unlucky with random injuries or more likely he is made of glass or he is a guy with an extremely low pain tolerance or he doesn’t want to play basketball he’s just good at it and it helps his brand or a combo of all these.

I don’t think it was limited to here. I followed Ish from a distance around the league so was pretty aware of what was going on in HOU and GSW around 2010-2014ish. There were those in the GSW fanbase that were very concerned or critical of all his (Curry’s) time missed. Some suggesting he was glass when he’d miss a game or 3 in the years after the one where he missed most of the season. So, it is very weird to go back now and see how little it actually was.

I think the better equivalent might be Zion Williamson as far as time played vs. missed. Not sure they are 1:1 comparable on games played but that’s who comes to mind immediately.

Spot on. Similar questions on injuries , can the body handle it and how much do you actually want to play basketball as a professional

This feeling, is, ummm, amazing. I’m not sure what to do with myself

I get there isn’t a lot to discuss especially with the all star break but this Lamelo talk is a little worthless after we just signed him to the max no? Not like you’d get a decent return if we did try and get out of it so we’re kinda stuck with hoping he’ll work his way back.

But y’all carry on :joy:

Guys. Everyone is balling out. Everyone.

Stick with me. What if. What if Clifford’s offense wasn’t really all that bad? And it was just what many of us have been saying for a long time-that the old roster just wasn’t all that good and didn’t fit well? Oh, and no depth either. This is all hindsight and conjecture at this point-we’re only four games in.

It’s just wild to see the cohesion of guys who haven’t even had a preseason together.

That first game when they played the grizzlies-they hadn’t even practiced together!! Sure, the grizzlies are injured and not great. But they turned around a game or two later and beat the Bucks (who were at full health).

warning: all caps coming up

NO NO NO NO NO NO. WE HAVE 8 YEARS OF HISTORICAL EVIDENCE THAT CLIFF IS NOT A GREAT HEAD COACH. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD HE BE RETAINED AND EXTENDED AS THE HEAD COACH.

I cannot believe I’m this excited right now, especially considering we have a 14 win team on our hands. My excitement is out of control, we may never lose again!

Oh, and since we’re all feeling ourselves right now. What don you think about Moses moody? I’m excited to see him play against us tomorrow. I’ve wondered if he could be a good 3andD player for the hornets to pursue. I think we’re pretty stacked with guards right now though.

Hey, I recognize those phrases!

Let me clarify, when I was talking about gap fillers and personal biases, I was referring to me as well. Basically all humans are bad at this. The word bias wasn’t meant as negative per se, just refers more to whatever our own personalities are prone to.

Like if you’re an eternal optimist, you’d think everything was fine, we have the best staff, its just rotten luck that got us here, but our future MVP of the league will be back soon on a championship tear.

Or if you’re a worst case scenario person, you might feel it’s a ploy for him to get a max contract, but pretend he’s hurt so he can get traded to LA. Also that he hates children and puppies, and he actually hurts his ankles because he kicks them whenever he sees them on the street.

And the gap filling is across sports, news, politics, science, religion, health. You could accidentally come across an X-ray without notes and your mind fills in the gaps that you’ve now got every kind of cancer, viral infection, and a brain eating amoeba, but it was actually your kid’s halloween drawing that their teacher laminated.

We’re free to talk about Melo’s health cause obviously that’s a main topic of concern. I just always thought tape was more protective than braces from my own experiences, and figured he was following the advice of the medical staff on what’s best and not being one of those entitled, me-first players. But I’m more of the give-the-benefit-of-the-doubt-until-proven-wrong type of guy, so I fill in my gaps from that perspective.

Lacks some athleticism, but apparently just an absolute basketball junkie. Was preparing like a pro while a frosh at UA. When he’s gotten run he’s looked good at GS. I think he’s got a nice stroke. Frankly I’m not sure why he’s fallen out of favor with the Warriors but I doubt it’s effort related
