2023-24 Hornets General Discussion Thread

And hand lotion

OMG lol!

It’s good to see teams interested but I can’t imagine Miles approving any trade as he would loose bird rights. Theoretically it wouldn’t affect teams like Detroit who have max space next year but even with those guys it’s more beneficial if they acquire him through us via sign/trade.

If he wants to go to a good team without max space then it has to be through us…which should net us a better return.

With all the shit we’ve had to deal with we deserve every scrap we can leverage out of him.

I can’t wait to see different players and a real coach for this team.

Watch what the Utah jazz are doing here. Really impressive stuff. Pin down screens, double actions, decoy, corner screening, three man action into a back screen.

Edit: gawd I wish we could have lauri markkanen.

We interviewed Will Hardy and he went to the Jazz. Smart choice in hindsight

Would Miami do Lowry and a first for Rozier + Bouknight?

Probably would want to off load josh richardson. perhaps a 3 teamer where Charlotte picks up a 2nd?

Also, lowry would be a buyout.

I’d assume Lowry would be a buyout but I wouldn’t mind a vet like him in our lockerroom to finish the season

it would be terrible form league wide to do that to a vet like lowry. that stuff matters

So what are/should we be looking to accomplish with a trade at this point?

When it comes to Miles, I haven’t come to the point that I absolutely want him gone but its trending that way and I want to get something for him if we’re going to lose him. There’s no way we get fair value for the production we’re losing. But he’s public enemy # 1 amongst the fan base and who knows if he’s even available next year with some of the legal stuff still looming, so I guess the number one objective with him is to salvage some value.

Most argue we should be looking for young prospects and draft capital in any trade scenario. I get the logic for a bottom barrel team that we are. But 2nd round picks do nothing for me and that path is highly likely to result in even more losing in the upcoming season, even if we are relatively healthy. After all the losing we’ve endured while trying to be a playoff team for the last several years and having acquired Melo and Mark and Brandon and another likely top 5 pick on the horizon, do we really want to go into next season with the expectation that it’s going to be another absolutely lost season. Would the excitement of having a young talented core that is fun to watch and is getting all the PT they can handle, be enough to stomach having no hope to win at a pace to make the playoffs?

Does the argument for vet players make any sense for us? Harrison Barnes and Huerter were names floated as available with the Kings interested in Miles. Could Barnes be a Marvin Williams type vet that sets a tone of professionalism for a young team and still offer something on court? Could Huerter be a sharpshooter that we need? Would either be worth taking on their contracts for 3 years?

is there a young player that Detroit might be willing to part with that makes sense to take a chance on? I doubt they trade Wiseman now that they got rid of Bagley and he’s a free agent at the end of the season anyway. Don’t see them giving up on Ivey. Maybe Killian Hayes is a possibility? But he too is on a 1 year deal.

Curious you all’s thoughts on realistic players we should be targeting and what it means for the direction we’re headed.

I’m not good at this trade stuff, but here goes. With the rumors of Heat being interested in Rozier and wanting to trade Lowry. So, Miami gets Rozier and Hayward, CLT gets Lowry, Herro and Jovic. Possibly swap around some picks, probably 2nd rounders, because MK. I figure Lowry would be a buyout, so Jovic and picks would help make that tolerable for Hornets. Herro is a younger Terry. Jovic could maybe be a poor man’s Markkanen. Hayward and Rozier would help the Heat, I think.

This team isn’t that bad. It just can’t get healthy. I know I am going to get life in prission but I think we should keep Miles if the contract isn’t to bad. I see a lot of junk talked about his game . But the guy is a team player and scores over 20ppg . His passed actions is my concern all so but we have made a desions when we signed him last season.

But the long term plans was , BUILD through the drafts in which we are close to day light.
Miles is a starter on most NBA teams . PJ, is a decent rotation player. Monk and Bouknight ended up bad moves . Melo a NBA all-star if healthy. Williams a decent starter when healthy too.Miller I see as a long term all star. Martin another consistent reserve. Richards more rotation player . Add a very high pick this year and sign some debth . We a play off team. We just got to keep these guys together and let them learn to play together . We getting close to being good but no one can wait . Bad signings have killed this team for years. Just think Batum and Hayward , Boris to name just a few. All of witch come in hear to get a free pay check. I for one prefer us to keep and grow our own talent. The change that needs to happen is to start at the top of management and training staff and make changes thair . Then we see how these players respond. We on this site don’t think our players have any value. I have heard on hear 2 second round picks for Miles . While on a Lakers site they would be asking 2 first and a good player. If we can’t get value use his money to sign a player in the off season. We then get at least get what we paying him to get value . Same goes for Hayward

Sounds like with the trade market you need to get ready to be very disappointed if we do make moves. We will be lucky to get a slimly desirable first for Rozier and we will be lucky to not have to buyout Hayward

Terry:

Lakers - Hachimura some matching salary and a future pick. I think that could be potentially valuable after LBJ leaves.

Knicks - Grimes/Fournier/pick. Grimes is a potential 2 to pair with Melo. The 1st probably this year and won’t be considered as valuable.

Miami - Lowry/future 1st. Same reasoning as the Lakers.

Bridges - I wouldn’t trade him this year but would work sign&trade after the season ends. I think this gets the best return.

Hayward I have no idea but I don’t like the idea of buying him out. I’d like to swap him for another player with say 2 years left and some draft compensation.

I wouldn’t trade PJ except for some stupid offer.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as we all have and I know I’m in the minority opinion (although Steelmatic and Dav have both but touch on some of these points). I just can’t get on board with what I see as us giving away good players for nickels on the dollar. Starting with Terry…I’'ve said it before, the guy has played at a high level for several years, at an all-star level this year if he was on a better team dropping 24 and 7 a night, and we’re talking about trading him for Quinten Grimes, a guy averaging 7 ppg who has steadily been fading to irrelevance in NY since the start of the season? Or 47 year old Kyle Lowery who’s clearly washed? In either case, we’d be basically giving Terry away for a draft pick that’s probably in the 20s. That would just be irresponsible imo given the level of player Terry is. If we’re going to take a lesser player in the deal, then we need to be getting an unprotected 1st that projects to be in the lottery. Otherwise it isn’t worth it. I get the itch to want to do something and not maintain status quo, but I just can’t see how some of these proposals make us better?

And for Miles, I know some consider him the worst scum on the planet…and he’s earned that. People like to pick nits about the things he doesn’t do well, and I get it. It’s hard to feel too good about rooting for the guy. And not saying he’s an all-NBA talent, but it can’t be said that he isn’t a skilled basketball player, nor can it be said that we aren’t significantly better with him than without him. We can hate him all we want, but it would be extreme negligence for the FO not to treat him as a valued asset. As such, we should be preparing to either re-sign him, or execute a trade to extract some real value for him. But just getting him off the team because we don’t like him as a person would be terrible asset management.

The thing that often frustrates me about national media is the presumed notion that we should always lose every trade. Give away a really good player to the Lakers or the Heat and get peanuts in return because we’re the Hornets and we should just accept that it’s like that. And honestly it feels like that mentality has crept into our fanbase as well. I certainly hope that’s not how ownership views it. I know we don’t have as much leverage with Miles given his pending free agency, but particularly as it relates to Terry, I hope they are saying, sure we’ll listen to offers but we’re not going to just give him away, so if you want him, be prepared to pay. If not, we hold what we’ve got, add another high lottery pick to the deck, hope we can get healthy and see how it looks next year.

I get it. I get the frustration. I get the lack of patience. I’ve been on this ride since '88 so I’m as frustrated and impatient as anyone. But the only way we get better is to value the assets we do have and demand that others teams do the same. To that end, doing nothing isn’t always the worst possible move.

I do get where you’re coming from. All I want to add is that future picks aren’t intended to be used but accumulated for trades. All the big names in trades pull multiple 1st and it’s past time we try that vs just taking the guys who fall.

I’m open to trading anybody outside of M3, but PHX doesn’t have any wings that interest me.

nassir little for richards. lets you trade pj

Is he injured? Hasn’t got many minutes in January.

If I checked correctly…

The Hornets are 4-3 when Ball, Bridges, and Miller play together!

This includes wins over Boston and Minnesota.

(not counting the Orlando game when LaMelo went down with injury after logging 14 minutes)
