2023-24 Hornets General Discussion Thread

I have no problem with it. It is well deserved. Aside from us, nobody (and I mean nobody) cares one bit about the charlotte nba team and it is completely justified. Charlotte deserves exactly to be the laughing stock of the nba and the butt of jokes.

Chef you are being too critical. There is not one current NBA team that deserves to be on a damn tombstone as a joke, regardless of the negative PR over the past several months

I can tell you that the Hornets are very aware of this situation and I would be surprised if TNT didn’t receive a call from them today.

It’s a shameful and ignorant thing to do for a ā€œleague partner.ā€

It was Halloween. I see it as free PR.

You are actually correct. From a business standpoint, TNT shouldn’t be trashing a team of the league that is broadcasting. It is bad form.

However, Charlotte absolutely is deserving of it though.

I agree. Feels like the worst thing we could do as an organization is raise a stink. We should have much thicker skin than that. It’s advertising for a team that gets no notice. It’s locker room material for a team that likely has a hard time generating enough interest nationally to cultivate any.

At least Kenny was looking out for us though.

Atkinson, or Smith?

Pain…. I wonder how we’d be if he was our coach. We need to shake things up… too bad he probably made the right decision to just back out.

I mean he probably screwed himself for life regarding getting another HC offer. So he must have thought coaching her was a worse option than that. That says a ton right there.

Odds of the coaching staff getting the boot if we go 2-8 or 3-7 in the first 10 games?

Whatever we do regarding changing GM & Coaching, I hope we do it so the new GM & HC are fully bedded in and familiar with our roster by the trade deadline.

With that in mind, I’d like the GM appointment to be made as soon as is practically possible. We need a rebuild from the very foundations of the franchise. We absolutely can have a top 5 practise facility, gym, S&C and rehab staff, for example. Let’s be one of the best at the things it only takes effort and intent to be.

100% behind this. We’ll never be seen as a destination spot, so make everything else on the margins the very best.

Seen a trade idea of us trading Gordon to the Pacers for Hield and Theis. That gives us shooting and a 3rd center while Hield is on an expiring deal that frees us more money in the offseason.

I’m luke warm on that trade. It does provide shooting and 3rd C. Theiss has a club option next year for 9.5. So, you’re not tied to additional salary. IDK, I think I would like to see if there’s something better. Maybe try to get a young replacement for Martin.

OT: Mike McDaniels is an OG Hornets fan and a Hornets hat was critical to his career. [dumb YouTube link) Start at 2:00 and watch until he gets the coaching internship with the Broncos.

2nd to last in 3pt making last year, 2nd to last this year.

JB criticism lost locker room, Clifford ever have? Clifford teams see turnarounds quickly in key areas, none of which team has picked up on.

Def rebounding limiting offensive opportunities & getting back limiting fast break points…#24 in getting DRB & #28 giving up fast break points.

Defense, even not most talented players see some defense improvement with communication & effort, and cannot ignore some is from pace adjusted…#26 giving up 120.5 points.

Low IQ leading to Lost possensions & opponent scoring, like
Fouls: #24
Turnovers: #18

To be fair, Clifford could have changed philosophies both team and Cliff are both learning & processing.

Also, Time frame could be longer and possibly end up with best results ever from team if can weather the bad…the very very bad.
Team has the most offensive weapons of any past team, least defensively capable. Fewest number of competent veterans & loaded with kids learning how to play.

Very Ugly but very limited 4 game sample size
Mitch hitch wagon to beater & limiting roster moves, Miles not in jail and don’t have other excuses to spin…at end of that inseason tournament and not shown improvements, at least a 50-50 chance new owners move on.

I hate to say it, but add Miles to the starting unit and it becomes much better balanced. His rim pressure will be welcome, but it’s his rebounding which we need. PJ is a poor rebounder and Mark isn’t really getting it done on the defensive end for us at the moment either.

The general formula seems to be … we’re not generating good looks, so we take poor shots, LaMelo especially, don’t get the rebound, then get beat in transition. The opposition then either makes the shot or gets the resulting rebound and has another go. I do think a lot of it starts with our best player playing like he’s our 4th best player, when he’s on a good night. Whatever is ailing LaMelo needs fixing if we’re to play functional ball. A fit/healthy LaMelo means every gets better looks and takes better shots. Clearly, we need some help from Cliff and the coaches here too.

I agree with your take on this. We definitely need Lamelo to get back to all-star form. I know he’s still getting into bball shape, but it’s so deflating to have our max salary star player struggling at a time when we needed/expected him to be taking his game to the next level.

The 3-pt defense has been atrocious, but equally concerning is the 3-pt offense. The starting backcourt is shooting a combined 23%. Have to believe that’ll get better, but until it does we’re going to struggle to win so we need more from Lamelo and Terry there. Thank goodness Terry can create shots for himself inside the arc, but he and Lamelo will have to start making more 3s for us to be competitive.

Also agree that despite the misgivings we all have about Miles the person, inserting Miles the player into our line up will be a much needed injection of talent. Whether starting or coming off the bench, we just need more depth. Outside of Miller our bench has been pretty unimpressive, although Nick did have a great game the other night. We let a 20 ppg scorer walk, have another 20ppg scorer currently suspended and our best wing defender is out until like 2026 so we desperately need anything Miles can give us upon his return.

Letting Oubre walk was a big mistake. He is killing it on my fantasy team. He wanted to be hear and we could have locked him up long term for a MLE at most. he is starting and averaging 23ppg on a winning team . Miles will help I agree . Our biggest problems is Cliff can;t coach at all. And we need a back up point guard bad .

I’ll continue to stand on that soapbox. Not re-signing Oubre was a misstep. Especially since the FO had to know Cody wasn’t anywhere near ready.
