This is the dumbest trade I have see in the 15 years I’ve been watching the NBA.

Rumor is that the Mavs were concerned with Luca’s lack of conditioning especially in the offseason (something we’ve all seen the past several years) and were nervous about handing him a supermax contract this summer which he was expecting.
I enjoy this angle.

We have mavs 2027 first and by then ad will be bad and the mavs will most likely be bad also so yay hornets i guess
The fallout on this is super interesting on realgm and media outside the NBA TV partners. Mavs gm saying they didn’t make any calls, they didn’t tell the coach and worked it out with his good buddy on the Lakers.
Almost a consensus suggesting or outright saying this smells like the league trying to salvage ratings.
My favorite one so far from the conspiracy theory line of reasoning on realgm:
Both AD and Kyrie get hurt. Dallas makes the lottery and wins the Cooper Flagg stakes in the only year they have a pick for the next 5.

Not only is this a horrendous trade, in fact it’s so bad-that it beckons conspiracy theory takes. Warranted, given how bizarre the actual trade is, as well as the context of how it went down.
Like chef said above, they admitted to No shopping for the best deal. Dallas only got ONE first round pick back. Which is bizarre.
I mean, do they want to move the team to Las Vegas?
Or is there something going on with Luka that we don’t know about? Especially since they’re getting ready to sign him to the mega super max soon. Something health wise?
I don’t know, but what I do know is that this is the most bizarre and horrible NBA trade I’ve ever seen. It’s something that an annoying lakers fan would put out there and get laughed at.
I was listening to several immediate reaction pods this morning. Can’t recall which but they started off antagonizing DAL for not shopping Luka but pretty quickly self surmised that between contract sizes and teams financially constrained, there were precious few options. And… that making it known that they are shopping him would have led to bedlam within the fan base.
I think in the end, these were two players that their respective teams didn’t see a good financial or competitive future in despite a contrasting narrative.

The question then begs, why did the Mavs allow the Lakers so much ammo to get a center and NOT get back more draft picks which they desperately need?
I"m generally a fan of simpler answers (Dallas wants to win this season and didn’t want a sideshow), but it’s definitely a crazy trade.
Haven’t paid attention outside of the Hornets, but doesn’t this kind of make Dallas’s roster make more sense too? Kyrie becomes lead guard for sure, Klay becomes natural 2.
I get completely that you don’t trade one of the league’s legit superstars just to balance your roster, but I see from a strategy perspective how this might make sense.
In an odd way, it’s refreshing to see something like this happen as opposed to say what’s going on in Miami.

I feel this trade makes Dallas better right now, Lakers worse right now but better in the future. I do get it for Dallas bc AD is still a stud and better than perceived in LA. It’s just that age gap.
What would be a trade the Hornets could make that would be on par with Luca -AD? Just trying to get a feel for what the fan bases are going through.
Probably something like Gerrard Wallace for Joel Przybilla, Dante Cunningham, 2011 first-round pick initially acquired from New Orleans (top-seven protected) and a 2013 first-round pick (top-12 protected)
