2024-25 Hornets General Discussion

Please dear Lord, make this move #1 of the blowup. Miles and melo out today for picks and players.

I’m 100% real here when i say that I’m highly relieved they did this. We spent too many years watching things happen on court, and have particularly Cliff say that what we were seeing was the hallucination and the player stay on forever, high in the rotation.

It was pretty apparent that Mark is either missing something motor wise, or effort wise. And they moved on, near immediately. It feels highly reassuring that they aren’t telling us it’s our imagination.

Is also great that we’re not heading into a contract extension with him in a year with only a contract year to go by, if that. And… the haul we got for him seems almost better than what the Mavs got for Luka lol.

10 thumbs up on this deal

You love to see it. Long live Jeff Peterson!!!

I so strongly feel this exact rationale should be applied to Melo before he asks for the trade we all know is coming.

You came to this conclusion after 15 years of wash, rinse and repeat. It is the correct conclusion.

I will say if the right deal presents itself*

Chef, if this franchise trades Lamelo you are looking at another 5 years before they sniff competitiveness. That is unsustainable for a franchise like ours. Unless we get back a player of Lamelo’s caliber plus a high quality 1st, Lamelo will still be a Hornet tomorrow.

Would I have traded Lamelo and picks for Luka? Absolutely.

They haven’t sniffed competitiveness with melo.

I’m on the fence about trading Mark, but that’s a nice return. We now have a log jam on the wing. Fully expect something today. Bridges possibly?

Well shit, did not expect to see this first thing in the morning. Guess that’s what happens when you decide to go to bed at a decent hour because your kids stupid school starts at 7.

Wow, Core Four, hardly knew ye. We’ve had more games with Tom Chambers than you. Josh Okogie has played more games than you, and we got him last week. The concept of the cOrE fOuR played together as much as Arnoldas Kulboka. Vernon Carey lasted more games than you. You were the James Nnaji of lineups.

I guess we’re tanking tanking. Mous and Taj holding it down on the low block while Melo and Miller are out? Yeah, they’re trying to make sure they’re getting into that top 3. Poop for Coop. Shart for Harp. Disgrace for Ace. Too bad Washington can’t beat anybody besides us, otherwise we could pass them in the standings. But Utah and New Orleans are right where we want them.

You can’t build anything without guys that can stay on the court. Maybe it’s just been coincidence, but it seems like we have (had) a few foundation players who have way too much trouble actually being foundations.

I’m not generally over reactionary, but I’m ready to trade most of the squad for guys that can stay healthy and have sound basketball skills.

19 players on the roster, gotta do something else. Even if it’s just a cut.

Unless we can take either Kenect or Reddish into Grant’s DPE, we have two players moving out by 3pm today w/out anything back. We need to free up a spot for our only viable 30-minute center now Diabate (only has like 7 games left before his 2-way forces him back to the Swarm or signed to a full contract).

Maybe we waive Micic - I could see that and if Reddish CAN be pulled into Grant’s DPE, then we’re golden.

When you ask if we should give the front office of any Charlotte area team the benefit of the doubt, the answer is always HEEEELLLLLLLL NO!!

Would I have traded Mark right now, probably not, but that’s also me ignoring a couple glaring red flags.

Mark seems like a great guy, with a joyful countenance, and the wingspan of a condor, so I’ve heard. And when he’s locked in, a 20 and 10 game seems to come pretty easy, even if he hasn’t turned on his engine in the first half yet.

But I’m sure Charles and Jeff see him every day and the effort he gives. It has not been great this year. Ideally, you want your players self motivated. The trend of whenever we play a center that has any kind of muscle mass, Mark completely disappears was more than concerning. Half the league has a strong big. The fact that he couldn’t even be put to guard Valanciunas or Brook Lopez, the way Vucevic ate him up for 40 with little resistance, that’s alarming.

When you have the tv broadcaster, live on air, say that you just had the worst effort he’s ever seen in the pros AND college, that’s more than alarming. I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Ogelsby is tough, but not reckless, not a hot take asshole. So that was an eye opener.

The locked on guys mentioned how the athleticism he seemed to have the first couple years was gone. He’s not a rim protector anymore, he can’t pressure the perimeter. His reaction time is slow, but he still hadn’t added the strength down low to be effective either.

The fact that he could be a no show in the first half and get a double double the second half show that Lee is probably hammering him in the locker room, and if that’s what it takes to get effort out of him, then its a losing battle. You shouldn’t require someone being on your ass to come out of your shell. It’s not a skill you can be taught. You have it or don’t. You either want to dominate somebody, or be part of the squad and collect a check.

I really like having the concept of a center, as that’s something the Hornets never ever ever ever get to have (or having a +500 record). A big you can toss the ball up to at any angle or time, and they get an easy dunk. Who can catch.

Moussa’s impact on the floor has been demonstrably better through the eye and metrics. I guess if you’re building a core, you can’t have nonchalant players be a big part of that, especially one with foot and back and effort issues.

He’ll be good catching lobs with the Luka and LeBron, but they’ll start wondering why every team has a layup line on them constantly and they can’t get stops.

I’d still love a Jarrett Allen somehow, or a Daniel Gafford type player, but coaches don’t give that up easily. Maybe Capela is available for cheap.

I don’t know, not that I love or hate the move, I hate that it got to this point with a player I had high hopes for. But if the people on the inside saw that they’re not going to get the best out of a guy, better to sell high from a desperate team I guess…

I posited this with my 15yo last night at the half - when I assumed he would come out and give something, heck any-thing in the 2nd. I am convinced he can look largely all-world in LA but never be a viable center here. There he’s a 5th option for anything. Here he was going to have to be a top 3 option. And he has a motor that either doesn’t turn over or does only after a massive warm up.

If we are viewing the latest incoming (at least DK, not necessarily CR) as getting heavy rotation minutes, we may be ready to move Miles in trade. LOH guys were saying he was one we are actively shopping. In that event, we could probably have the pick of any 2nd tier centers based on how Miles has played the last month. And we already took the PR hit.

The only problem with a Miles trade though is - I assume - most teams will not be able to take on more money in than they send out. And most centers on the market that would be tradable aren’t going to exceed his 27m. So we’re into waiving more players still which becomes problematic with so many guys out for the rest of this season.

Llama 3.1 70B

In the NBA, a Disabled Player Exception (DPE) is a type of exception that allows a team to sign a replacement player or acquire a player via trade when a player on their roster suffers a season-ending injury.

According to the NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team can use a DPE to acquire a player via trade, but there are some restrictions. The player being acquired must have a salary that does not exceed the amount of the DPE, and the team must have enough cap space to absorb the player’s salary.

However, there is a catch. The player being acquired cannot be a player who is currently under contract with another team and has a salary that exceeds the amount of the DPE. This means that a team cannot trade for a player who has a higher salary than the DPE amount.

But, if a team has a DPE and wants to acquire a player via trade, they can do so if the player being acquired has a salary that is equal to or less than the DPE amount. Additionally, the team can also use the DPE to acquire a player who is on a non-guaranteed contract or a player who is on a minimum salary contract.

It’s worth noting that the NBA has specific rules and procedures for using a DPE, and teams must follow these rules carefully to avoid any potential penalties or issues.

Guess we’ll see how good ole Llama 3.1 is at this game.

I guess this is the frustrating part. We never really got to see what we had with this group before we tore it up. But it also seems obvious that expecting us to ever get completely healthy is kinda like expecting an answer to a question after someone has responded ā€œWe’ll see.ā€

If we don’t land the number one pick in the draft this year, I’d love to see us trade a bunch of these stocked up firsts for the right to draft Cooper Flagg.

Somewhat related, I like what the Rockets have done: get good picks and then get a vet floor general that’s dependable to orchestrate and lead team. Currently 3rd in western conference and 6th in league.

I ain’t mad if we go in that direction.

Nobody with the 1st pick will do that. At least outside Dallas perhaps
