I base this on no reporting or factual data, but I feel like we’re not going to see mark Williams for another month. Prove me wrong mark!

So Mann is starting to look like one of the biggest steals in recent NBA history. Looking like he could be the Hornets version of Greg Olsen. It’s still a bit shocking that OKC gave up on him. Curious to see what a next contract looks like, but it’s getting bigger by the day. Whatever the number though, I certainly hope we will do whatever it takes to keep him here long term. It’s rare that we fleece another team in a trade and essentially get a do over on our draft pick by swapping out Bouk for Mann so I hope the new FO is ready to drop the bag.
We need to talk about tre mann. Averaging 20.5ppg and shooting 42.9% from three.
Let’s say Tre continues to mostly play pretty well for the remainder of the season. He may not finish as a 20ppg+ guy and I’d expect the three point shooting to regress a bit to his career mean. Or, Tre could say screw you and just be a 20ppg player and 42% three shooter this season.
But for this thought experiment, let’s say he finishes around 16-18ppg and shoots 38% from three.
So what do you pay him? In an ideal world, I’d hope for a 4/48 deal. Coby white signed a 3/36 deal with the bulls, just as a comparison. If he wants money instead of term, which would make sense for a player who at his age would be angling for an even larger future deal…would the hornets have to go up to 2yrs/35-40m?
4yrs/60m would be as high as I’d go. Thoughts?
If mann was keen on a short term deal so he could play for an even larger deal in the future, I’d oblige him with a 1 year/20 mil deal or even a 2 year/36 mil deal. That’d be obliviously on the high end but the short term contract would be more do able.
Having said, I think there’s great vibes with Mann and being in Charlotte. I’d say there’s some sentimentality for him in terms of having a franchise trade for him, believe in him, and give him a meaningful role.
If he continues to play like this, we should jump at the chance to sign him to anything under $20m/yr over 3-4 years. Something like Monk’s deal with SAC would be a really good get (4yr $78m). In the out years, that contract is 11.5% of the cap. That’s a solid margin as we’d assume Miller and Ball will be around 50% combined, max.
It’s not that I’d necessarily be against a monk type contract, I just wonder if tre mann would command be able to command that kind of deal (4/78).
Say that Mann finishes this season at 16-18ppg and continues to play the well rounded basketball that we’ve seen so far. Is one good season of 18ppg enough to command a contract like monk’s?
For context, monk has finished in the top 5 in 6th man of the year voting for two straight years, and is a solid candidate for that award this season. Has been a pretty consistent scorer for a couple years.
I’m a huge believer on mann, but with only one year or so of this makes me believe that would suppress his price
You may be right. However, every subsequent year these guys sign, they are upping their value by 8 or so percent. So his advantage of not signing an extension probably earns him that contract basis bump. In other words, I’d look at Monk’s $78M contract signed this year as being $84M if he were signing it next year. So signing for the same or near same money is shy of that.
Too, he doesn’t have the up and down playing history or drug offense that Monk does. That’s not to say that impacted Monk’s current contract, more to say that Monk would have had this type of contract in front of him in 2021-22 if he had a more predictable track.
I may also be dead ass wrong as well. I understand the larger contract but wonder if he’ll have the asking power to get there.
Yeah, this is definitely the part that makes it so hard to evaluate Mann’s value. No matter how well he plays this year, he will have only done it at that level for one year. For our sake I hope that does lower his asking price.
Melo with the girl scream and slap
I’ve seen some crazy contracts being floated around amongst other hornets fans/Reddit/forums, and it’s a little absurd. I get people’s excitement but damn. No doubting mann’s skill and further upside, I just think his small sample size will be of help to the hornets front office in terms of contract. It’s a win win all around.
Monk’s deal is a great comp. He’s had success for several years. Has been in top 5 in 6th man votes and is a vegas bet for 6th man of the year this season. Mann doesn’t have that and IMO cannot have the asking power for something like that.
I’d love a 4/48 deal, but tre mann is unleashed. And he knows it. He’ll want a bigger short term deal to play for a larger contract. I’d wager a 2/40 if he continues to go nuts this year. But I doubt his three point percentage stays at 43% or ppg at 20.5+
Yeah, I think we’re in such small sample size range at this point in the season. Until we see, or moreso the team sees him over 20-30 games, it’s all ephemeral and can turn into Dwayne Bacon rather than Malik Monk. Hope that’s not the case, and betting out isn’t, but still at this point can be.
I do think, if he stays at this level for 82 games, 4y/80m will be what we are excited by come July 1.
I agree with all of that and especially this point. 4/80 is not a crazy number at all if he maintains this level of play throughout the year. With the mid-level being around 12m, he’ll easily command more than that. With the league inflation, 20mil actually feels like it’s at the lower end of a sub-star, quality starter salary, which is the level at which he’s playing, even if he technically never starts. FMV for contracts is always hard for me to figure, but it wouldn’t surprise me if his camp asked for more, although I think/hope 4/80 is about where we end up.
I found these stats on Sports alert. I had never seen these before. I hope they are better at the end of the season. I believe they will be.
Mark williams still out. Zero timetable for his return. No day to day or week to week. Nada. Out.
I wonder if we won’t see him until December. This is beyond frustrating. I don’t question his talent and I may be higher on mark than others, but I just don’t see how the hornets don’t go after a center in the draft, trade, or free agency. This is crazy.
MARK WILLIAMS STILL NOT CLOSE
Looks like Mark Williams won’t be in uniform in the immediate future. Five weeks after being diagnosed with a strained tendon in his left foot, the Hornets’ starting center remains sidelined and there’s no clear indication he’s going to be available any time soon. “Mark has been doing really well with his return-to-play plan,” Lee said. “I think that he’s done a good amount of individual work right now.” However, Williams has yet to complete any full team drills or scrimmaging, which are two of the hurdles he must clear before making his regular-season debut. No timeline has been given for his return.
Williams, who missed most of 2023-24 with a back problem, sprained a tendon in his left foot during workouts last month just prior to the team heading up to Raleigh for training camp at Duke University. After playing in only 19 games a season ago, he was expected to be fully healthy entering his third year and be an integral piece of the Hornets’ rotation under Lee as a rim protector and offensive option on the interior. But Williams is relegated to spectator duty at the moment and it’s unclear when that will change. “He’s engaged and observing all practice activities and film,” Lee said, “and even (Friday) at shootaround, he’s sitting next to me, trying to talk through the game plan and stuff. So, he’s doing all he can to make sure he’s soaking up all the information and terminology and when he comes back, he’s going to be ready to hit the ground running. “But for now, he’s just kind of doing individual work. And the next phase of his return-to-play plan, he’ll do some group-type activities. And then once we get to practices and things like that, I think we’ll update further.”

Really worried about Mark’s future here
I would dump him. There’s not enough time to deal with another dried out rookie contract that won’t work out.
