Draft Prospects 2021

Tjarks has a good article on the Ringer featuring Kai Jones. He likes him a lot, and mentions Charlotte as a great landing place for him.

So if we’re looking for a shot blocking big man who can defend on the perimeter, has fluidity and a scoring touch; he’s literally right there staring at us. Yes, he needs to develop his body and his skills further; but the potential seems real.

Hey if we pass we can always try to sign him when he’s a restricted free agent in four years.

looks good to me. i wonder if there is a way to combine 2 2nds and someone like wannamaker, carey or mcdaniels to land back into the #20s and pick him up

edit: the more i watch him the more i really like him. he plays very hard, is always attacking offensively and looks like he can defend multiple positions for longer periods of time.

If we are looking at prospects who we’re happy to park in Greensboro for a year, focusing on the potential upside then @eshelmon’s idea of trading 11 for 16 & 18 starts to look good.

We could be looking at the likes of Springer (who I really like as a 6th man/combo guard) or maybe Keon Johnson.

Maybe Ziaire Williams or Jalen Johnson is there? Both have questions but clear potential and good size/versatility.

Probably at least one of Kai Jones and Isaiah Jackson will be. Maybe roll the dice with Garuba and just hope we can bring his offense along to an acceptable level and that he grows another couple of inches!

If Wagner, Moody & Bouknight are gone by 11, this might just be the way to go.

I’m rarely excited about picking big men this high in the lottery. Would rather solve that need via free agency.

6’11.5 Longhorn height at combine
fresh 34 games, 22.2 minutes, 10.1 pts, 45/27% 3p, 84 FT, 6.5 rebounds, .3 STL, 2.6 BLK,
20 ass, 47 to, 82 PF
soph 26 games, 22.8 minutes, 8.8 pts, 58/38 3p, 69 FT, 4.8 reb, .8 stl, .9 blk
16 pass, 36 TO, 69 PF

freshman #11 2015 Turner, sophmore Kai. Kai fresh numbers not comparable to Myles. Both not good playmakers or over agressive on defense.

At first look kai 3p shooting and dunking salivating, overall better Myles offense. But where are rebounds, defense, and block shots?
Some cause Myles longer and a bigger 240 coming out and Kai just not as good…Myles top 10 but poss top 5 w/o injury concern. But some cause Kai play next to Sims and Brown, just would have liked being the better of 3 somewhere there.
Not convice best pick for us at 11 but can see us taking. Gets a big JB can put in mix of his center rotatings with shorter ball PJ and a 5 mill free agent range defender/rim protecter not Bis…a Noel, WCS, Mcgee, etcs. About 15 + 9 MLE for vetheran guards and wings for JB and Balls offense.

One of these guys will be a Hornet come 7.30.2021

So this is just for discussion.

The recent insider article on ESPN was about which teams could theoretically trade for the #1 pick and it make sense for both teams.

My question, is if Detroit called you (the hornets gm) and offered #1 for melo straight up (filler salary to make it work) would you do it? And who would you draft?

I hear you there, but the entire Tennessee team fell off as the season progressed. I’m under the opinion that the roster was far better than the result and could have been a sneaky elite 8 team.

1a/1b moody/Keon.

Don’t think moody will be there for us though, so it may be Keon. I kind of don’t care this year too much the draft, as it seems this year has several good selections for where the Hornets pick.

No, Melo’s proven to be a high impact player, super raw with a TON of upside. He has top 5 player in the NBA upside.

No to proposed. Lamelo a special talent on the court…Cade is very highly rated and skilled talent, buts still a prospect not played a minute yet.
Counter, start with filler reunion get Corey Joseph for JB, Killian and Bey for Martin twins, and b4 go on further det gm hangs up.

Reserving the right to rethink this in a week, I am trying to get myself mentally prepped for the 29th. I think the top 6 are a foregone conclusion yet the order is not. But considering we’re not trading into the top 5, I don’t think that matters. So saying that, I fully believe Cunningham, Green, Barnes, Kuminga, Mobley, and Suggs are all gone by pick #7. Netting out what I’d like to happen from there, these are my guys:

Please, please, please (ordered by preference)

  1. Moses Moody
  2. Franz Wagner
  3. James Bouknight

Cool, cool - this is really interesting (ordered by preference)

  1. Keon Johnson
  2. Josh Giddey

I get what you are thinking Mitch but glad it’s you not me making that call

  • Zaire Williams
  • Davion Mitchell

Please, please, don’t, but if it pops and works out, you are a genius Mitch

  • Usman Garuba
  • Kai Jones

So there’s a 100% chance we could pick from my top two categories and for that, this seems like a pretty good outlook draft. And I don’t think Mitch has been a bad judge of talent in the draft (or moreso his scouting team). Curious other folks thoughts now that we’re under two weeks to jersey and hat photo day.

Only player I’m totally 100% out on is Garuba, he just seems like the modern version of Biz to me

Unless one of the top 5-6 drops for some reason, my 1a-b are Moody and Bouknight, flip a coin. However, I’m not opposed to trading back say with OKC or NYK and adding an early 2nd round pick. Going by Tankathon mock, players like Bouknight, Kai jones, Jaden Springer, Isaiah Jackson could be there in the 16-19 range, and have good quality players on the board for early 2nd. Would love to get Joe Wieskamp in the 2nd somehow.

Excited, but not without timeline concerns make them #11 and not top 10

Keon ? scorer now, a plus rest of game…will see big time highlight Ball-Keon dunks
Bouknight plus scorer right away, ? rest of game…strong 3 level scoring skills

Less exciting and lower upside fall out of 10, but safer picks and fills roll if FO feels has to get minutes right away. Void in 6-9 in middle roster, 6-10 w/o Cody.

Moody 3&D wing in rotation may be that highest floor lowest ceiling…at time felt a lot about Miles. Better playmaker and defense, unlikely never the scorer Miles became last year.
Davion…not exactly Devonte 2.0 but similar skill and fit with more talent…get minutes right away don’t need a year of g-league.

I do not have a top 10 and definite one talent separated right now, but more top 10 and a handful that changes about every week. OK, for now, we take the oldest and most experienced Corey Kispert. As exciting (and old) as Suns drafting Cameron Johnson #11 in 2019.
Better shooter and passer than CJ coming out. Not athletic, feel safe predicting never posterizing PJ Tucker…or anyone…but neither drafted for defense and rebounding anyhow.
Won’t be dunking Ball passes, but gets Ball and offense another shot maker and playmaker.
When Hayward not in game offense drops off and out injured team 9-19. Not replace Hayward, Hayward extra lite to alleviate drop off when not on court.

Malik’s out the door isn’t he? So it’s Bouknight or Moody for me, both can come straight in and take a chunk of those Monk minutes.

Bouknight as my 1a, I think he’s got the potential to be a high level scorer in the league, especially with Lamelo feeding him the ball. Think his shot will translate well and his % will shoot up when he hits the league, even more so next to people like lamelo and Hayward.

The pick that fills me with fear (may look like a fool for this one in a few years) is Kai Jones, I see the talent but he’s raw and I don’t think he fits our timeframe, we need to be a winning team over the next couple of seasons if we’re convincing Lamelo to stay and I don’t think there’s a space in the roster for a project at this point.

Hoping we address the lack of size in free agency/trade.

I like the kid’s list

Good list GW

I wouldn’t hesitate to slide keon Johnson into the first group
