Hornets Summer League

It’s so weird to see us not contest 3 pointers in SL any better than we do during the regular season. It’s like we have a mode and this is one of the consistencies. It seems like film study notwithstanding, this is just how they coach em up.

Good to hear:

Is this coaching staff supposed to be good at development? The past two summer league experiences (to this point) have been absolutely horrible. We have so many young RAW players and we expect they’ll progress and bloom. Do we have a staff in place to make that happen on any level (even the Swarm have sucked).

What is our mission in SL? Are we just throwing them out there and say show us what you can do or are we actually trying to work on things individually or as teammates? I wish they’d offer some insight cause all I see is a train wreck.

I thought Kai was surprisingly good today. Really active. Miller needs to be more aggressive. Not sure why he’s standing in the corner so much. He’s just so passive. Not sure what the deal is there. But, I still have high hopes for him.

Maybe the one thing to be fair, Spurs have been running their system for the last 25 years, Pop won’t stand for anyone not playing the right way.

Golden state also has a championship system, which brings a seriousness to their franchise and branches.

Us? Haha. Lmao. Wtf. We gut the system every few years, starting from the ground up. The varsity team, JV team, summer league teams all lack accountability and seriousness and leadership to even create the expectations of success.

Come on dude… why not show some support for the guy. I wanted Scoot too but come on man. Miller still is super talented.

I think we just play pick and roll or die. That is the development. Play pick and roll at NBA speed.

I’m not saying we’re executing, but that’s clearly the plan.

It sort of looks like that. Maybe, being generous, we did just roll the ball out there for Sacramento and we’ll install something tomorrow for Vegas. But it seems unlikely we could make marked improvement.

I’ll start with the fact that I was a Scooter. With that said, I’m 100% behind Miller. I will say, though, these first 2 outings have been rough. He is going to have to work on his handle and be a jump shot extraordinaire. He doesn’t move like a Number 2 pick (meaning, he can’t really get past anyone and he can’t really get off the floor). At this point, though, I want us to run the offense through him. We aren’t running offense now, so what’s the worst that can happen? We lose by 20? Oh, right. Kid needs some confidence and to get the feel of the game. I just want us all to give the kid the opportunity to learn, excel and then ultimately shine. It will take some time, but with LaMelo getting him the ball in spots and some semblance of offense, I think we’ll begin to see him blossom by years end.

I can’t say it enough, summer league is just a lesser talented mirror of Clifford’s NBA offensive and defensive sets.

Am I the only that see’s this? Am I wrong? I just don’t get why Clifford was brought back and I certainly don’t get how there wasn’t a fan revolt

I think he’s talented too. But he’s turning the ball over a lot and is committing a lot of fouls because he’s slower and isn’t an explosive athlete. I don’t think that’s me finding ways to give Miller a hard time. It’s just what has happened two games in. On one hand, it’s just summer league-on the other hand, this could be a bad omen. Lots of basketball left this summer.

He does need to chill on the fouls and the turnovers, but I do think that should fix itself once he gets more comfortable. I think things will be easier for him playing with Melo. He still passes the eye test for me though. You can see hints of what he could be. He just needs to be more aggressive.

I see this too. Just guys standing around. Everything has always looked so hard for us and it translate into summer league… only worse. Other teams just move the ball around… we always seem like we don’t run any plays. It honestly didn’t feel a lot different with JB for me either. I swear we still haven’t had a good inbounds play out of a timeout in years.

There was a revolt/revolution. Dozens of fans grumbled at home behind their computers and a handful or so rioted the spectrum center. The revolution was televised, but the ratings were horrible.

This is funny

Our summer league team is a collective of clowns who are just looking for their own shot.

I would like to see Miller be more assertive, but this is on the clown coach as much as it is on him.

I’d love for him go and get the ball… instead of going away from it. Not sure if that’s coaching or what. We do love to have guys just stand in the corner though. I remember us doing that with Monk a lot too.

The thing that makes little to no sense to me is whats the point of even doing the Summer League shit if you’re not trying to help your players progress? The coaches either suck or the players suck but like we’re sending our draft picks out there to play what appears to be rec ball at best and jeopardizing their safety and not getting them off to a positive start mentally to their careers. Why bother? If this keeps going the way it has for the last two seasons it’d be great to get some answers as to what the hell they’re doing.

It seems like every time summer league comes around we look the same. No sense of direction or system. I know we need a point guard but, the coaching staff leaves a lot to be desired.

It’s a collection of first round picks. We’ve got four of them in the starting line-up. That’s the worrying part. More so, any third year, first round players should be absolutely dominating Summer League.

I’m fine with what Smith and Bailey are putting out there. I’m worried that Miller’s lack of athleticism, burst & strength, limits him even in Summer League. I was prepared for it to be a problem in the actual NBA. That said, the other parts of his game look good. If he’s open, he’s letting it go and hitting it. If you’re open, he’ll find you, and he’ll put the effort in on D.

PS: I think a good deal of Miller’s issue at the rim is he forces it in situations he should be taking an easy mid-range shot. I wonder about the 3 or rim mandate he had in college and how that still lingers. I’ve seen plenty of times, while watching his tape in the build up to the draft, where he could have had an easy midrange shot but clearly had his coaches in his head and took it to the rim, where he got rejected. Hopefully he’s given more freedom here, as I think he’ll benefit from that.
