Probably too much to give up for us. Also, don’t know if Was will trade in-division.
Gaffords contract would be perfect for us!
No way i touch that trade. The two together average 10ppg Less than PJ by his self. And to add a 1st to them not any way i even consider it
I’d easily send a protected 1st. Turner and Bamba sure up the center position and allow you to figure out if Bamba is legit and you want to resign. I think at worst he is some version of Clint capela.
Turner expires next year which let’s you either trade him or just let his money fall off the cap when you are looking for room anyway.
I’m pro Gafford for obvious reasons
I’m surprised how many would send out PJ when he’s arguably this teams best defender and likely changes the heavier minutes and use of Plumlee when healthy. And we still have him under contract this year and next.
If we find a stop gap between this year and next, I’m all for it. But I can’t imagine that it’s something that throws away the court and contract utility of PJ this year.
If we can’t find a trade for a center that will move the needle then I would agree with this. Hopefully we can find a bargain stop gap center sometime before the deadline.
I’m not sure I’d call PJ the teams beat defender. PJ had a very rough season last year and was extremely up and down (mostly down). He had a few big games, but for the most part looked sluggish and slow. Not sure I’ve seen a huge improvement this season. Since the promise he showed that first season, he’s really taken a step back.
Please present the argument that PJ is our best defender. I am genuinely curious.
I would trade PJ for the right piece. Not as a throw in though. He is obviously very important to our team and should only be sent out for a 5.
IMO, PJ has generally received more criticism than I think he deserves. I personally haven’t seen the lazy, sluggishness in his game that is often mentioned. I’ve said before that I think his understated demeanor can give that impression, but I’ve never thought he was lacking in effort.
I would say that I think the mantle of “team’s best defender” probably goes to Cody, but I agree that PJ is an underrated defender, particularly since he is often tasked with guarding much bigger players. I don’t see star potential in him, but I do think he’s a solid, talented player, which is what makes him a viable trade asset. I like him, but would certainly be willing to move him for the piece we need.
I wouldn’t trade PJ. He had an up and down season but if we could get a legit C he would be able to move to the 4 which I think is his best spot on this team. I don’t like the small ball 5 stuff because we loose out on the boards. I would move Hayward allowing us to get a big and a replacement for him. Like I’ve said before T Ross and Bamba are making a combined 20 to 24 mil. for the next 2yrs. Make it happen without giving up Hayward is fine but that contract free’s up money to resign Sky Miles and some.
The reference starts with arguably so not sure this is a hill I have declared worth dying over. But I can easily articulate his value defensively where he’s a plus vs. any of those he’s replaced at the 5 last year and noone is really challenging him for the spot this year yet.
Amongst bigs last year, excluding guys that played less than 10mpg; PJ held the best defensive rating, and led all bigs in defensive win shares and steals. He led the team overall in defensive rebounds and blocked shots. I wouldn’t categorize him as an anchor down low and it’s perhaps highly insulting to the team to say he’s our best big defender. But to me, it’s easy to argue that he is just that.
I think he is a decent defender . He’s way to small to guard a big center. Teams with two big men give us trouble. I think him and Miles and both better defending the center than Plumdog,
I hope Kai comes back ready
I think @DemonDeaCat summed up my feelings best, I like him but would certainly be willing to move him for a piece we need.
PJ’s versatile, can shoot and defend (although his inconsistency worries me) but he’s a 6/7 man on this roster IF we resign Miles. In a world where he’s part of the package for a starting #5 I’d be just fine giving PJ’s minutes to McDaniels. No to mention we have Kai & Thor coming through the system.
We must’ve watched different teams last year. PJ looked like a step behind and was sluggish.
Note that I didn’t call him lazy. He just seemed off last year and not dialed in. He wasn’t the player that showed such promise the season before. And i still don’t see the flashes of brilliance back.
My take on this now is that we have to send out Hayward. He is still playing good ball but in order for us to keep what we have and add more pieces he’s the odd man out. His salary is 30 mill where we could resign Sky Miles 25ish while taking Hayward’s salary and adding 2 or 3 pieces like Turner, Bamba, T Ross or Bagley III. This would slide Miles back to SF and allow PJ to the 4 spot.
Melo, Ish,
Rozier, Bouknight, Lewis
Miles, Oubre Jr, Martin
PJ, Bagley III, McDaniels, JT Thor
Turner, Plumlee, Richards, Kai Jones
We might loss some scoring from Hayward but I think Turner and PJ could replace some if not most of it. Oubre Jr has impressed me and I think between Oubre Jr, Martin, McDaniels and Bagley III would all improve with more mins.
Been thinking the same. We need to turn Hayward into a guy like Holmes, obviously that isn’t Holmes haha.
I would also be fine entering the Simmons sweeps IF we do due diligence on if he will join the team or want to be the face. We already have a face and wouldn’t ask him to be our Offensive superweapon. We need a defensive anchor
So how does this trade work?
I think Turner is over rated. His scoring numbers are not that good . He is a slight up grade over what we have now. But i don’t think he moves the needle that much considering money.
Also, I am STILL team “you guys think Myles Turner is way better than he is” and wouldn’t give up Hayward for Turner. Turner is in his 7th year and still is struggling with consistency.
Now if they want to get rid of Sabonis? Different story.
I don’t see anywhere near equal value in Hayward for Myles unless the former is in a full body cast for a significant chunk of the season. Myles - IMO - might get stats but doesn’t do anything consistent that adds to winning. To me, a guy like Claxton, if healthy, gives you all the defensive numbers that Turner does.
