2023 Free Agency and Off-Season Action

I love his talent but it doesn’t seem to work in Minnesota being paired with Gobert. Mark is probably a better teammate than Gobert, so maybe things would be different here. I do love the idea though.

He probably could have had that, if hadn’t have done what he did. I’m not sure why he thinks he deserves that now. Maybe this season he balls out and looks like a different guy off the court, and he’d be worth it… but that does seem like too much.

I don’t disagree that I’d rather have Towns, but I wonder if he’d actually sign here. That’s always the risk with not re-signing your own players…you get left with squat. That’s not to say we should’ve overpaid Miles or PJ, just that we’ve seen it proven time and again that Charlotte isn’t really a draw for big time FA’s.

I really struggle with this mindset, and I’ll craft an accessible response.

It reminds me of the cognitive error people make when they say, “if I set my expectations low, I can limit bad things from happening and limit my disappointment.”

This is where I often see people get stuck in life-when they create a world that’s inherently limiting. It’s impossible to limit the “bad” things (failure, disappointment, etc.) from happening without also limiting the great things from happening.

Unintentionally, this creates a narrow window of experience: a system where nothing particularly horrible is happening, but conversely, nothing really great is happening either. Unfortunately, this feels like a very safe space, but in reality it’s filled with stagnation and insidious destruction.

This self-created narrow window of stagnation is where the hornets have existed. For a long time.

Could the Charlotte Hornets go for it and miss on a free agent like KAT? Absolutely.

Or, they could also land KAT, and transform the franchise with the Melo/KAT pairing. I’m tired of this franchise boxing itself into this limited window. I’d rather see them go for it, and truly fail-opposed to how the past 3/4 years have been.

Edit: and I believe that this new ownership group refusing to pay PJ and Miles the big money they want is the start of a paradigm shift. The old hornets lock up PJ and Miles for several years 10/10 times.

That’s fair, but personally I think it’s a flawed approach to how we can build a team in Charlotte. Relying on potential FA’s to sign here, when the probability is low, seems like we’re setting ourselves up. I think we need to be more active in the trade market.Either building our scouting department/FO and trading for picks (see Thunder) or trading picks for players (see Milwaukee). That’s all easier said than done I know, but an approach of holding steady and hoping we sign a big FA I’m not certain is feasible either. I just want to see some W’s come our way. Lol.

Im not proposing that the team relies on free agents. I’m saying that the team picks it’s spots and takes a shot when there’s an opportunity. I’ve never said they should rely on free agents.

And the possibility of pairing KAT in his prime with Melo who is entering his prime seems like a reasonable shot to take.

Gotcha. I guess I misunderstood the point of picking your spot with someone like KAT vs. it as a general strategy. All good.

This impact anything with PJ?

I doubt it. That’s probably why they did the Grant Williams deal

I thought that grant Williams contract was very reasonable.

If this is the case, why in the world weren’t we interested in DSJ for more than what BKN gave him? I get that he’s a better 3pt shooter, but that’s not everything and he’s not the locker room guy DSJ was and could have been.

Agreed that’s my issue with it why does he think he deserves 25, just more sense of entitlement from an individual who should be entitled to nothing.

Anyway, he’s signed a QO so let’s see what happens… wonder how much thought they gave to the injury angle… if he knackers his knee this season that could be the last 8 million he earns, it’s a contact sport, stranger things have happened.

*disclaimer, so my words aren’t twisted, I wouldn’t wish an injury on any player…

Rockets are signing everyone. I just feel we are too passive. I just want us more aggressive in the free agent market.

Not this year. This isn’t the year for it.

Next year my friend. You’ll be happy with the new ownership’s patience. What I’ve been saying is coming together.

Step 1: don’t tie up long term money on players who haven’t gotten us there (PJ, Miles).

Step 2: approach a very good free agent class with a ton of cap room and give the chance for new ownership to make their mark.

Step 3: profit?

I’m still not certain we will do that, unless we get rid of Mitch. I’m scared it’s going to be the exact same next season. We’re going to have to overpay anyone we get to play for us… and we’ll probably just sit on our hands. But hopefully things will change…

Not to over-use my favorite word, but that’s hilarious.

We can’t beat the freaking Rockets for a veteran 2nd tier player.

Guys, maybe players don’t want to commit until they see who’s going to be here permanently going forward.

We got a lame duck GM and a lame duck Head Coach right now. I don’t blame them for not wanting to commit to that unless they have to.

That does seem entirely reasonable Coach.

That’s why I mentioned we need to hear something from the “new ownership group” on their direction for the organization. Not even specifically for this FA or the shitty summer league but the whole thing… have they taken control or is anyone in control?
