Lester Quinones looked good. Averaged 22 in G-league play last year. Really aggressive good shooter. Only on QO.
Let’s sign him to a big sheet that GS can’t match, and steal him for the rest of our summer league. But he also looks like he could be a good player in the league too.
I know the thought of PJ signing his tender and losing him and Miles next summer sounds bad then we would have lots of cap space, new ownership perhaps willing to open their wallets and this free agent class
This is what I’ve been saying for the past few months. Reasons not to overpay Miles, PJ, and Oubre: the upcoming free agent classes coupled with the onset of Melo’s super max.
The front office appears to be looking ahead instead of wasting more years of locked up cap space. Looks like the front office doesn’t want to “Run It Back”. I’ve been yammering on and on about it incessantly. I know that my diatribes get old, but at least they seem to have merit-according to how this has unfolded.
But hey, the Hornets could throw big money at Miles and PJ in the summer of 2024 and completely negate everything I’m saying. So, who cares?
Hopefully PJ looks at that class and thinks it’s not worth the risk betting on his self and signing the qualifying offer like Miles did. Especially with Miles coming back and the risk that reduces PJs role and production to gain a greater offer.
Not as big or good but moderate 2nd & 3rd tier group Hornets market free agents. Possible Some decent bargain shopping get 3 for our 35 million under cap next year to replace Gordon, Miles, & PJ/other 1 year 19 million.
Yeah, this is a good point. If Gordon is still here, he’ll come off the bench unless they trade or bench him.
Betting on yourself is fine and good, but the chance of his stats falling in a contract year, he may have to settle for MLE money next year, so signing the QO is as big a risk to him as us.
If both parties can get to 17-18, that should be fair.
I don’t know where else to post this but… Has the new “ownership group” taken hold yet? We seem to DESPERATELY need direction. What is their plan? Do they have one?
The plan is to wait to see what everyone else is doing and then do something. That is the plan.
It does still look like the plan could be to sign PJ right? I wonder what the odds are that he just signs the qualifying offer and becomes an unrestricted free agent with Miles?
The plan appears to be not to overpay. For that, I applaud them. It’s frustrating, but necessary. If PJ has any sense, and we’re not taking the piss contract wise, I think he’ll compromise his demands a bit.
@Steelmatic made a very good point, PJ will be in a contract year fighting for playing time and ‘stats’ with Miles, also in a contract year, and Hayward.
PS: Dallas is absolutely killing it this off season. Great work in the draft (trading down two spots, getting rid of Bertans’ contract and still drafting the guy they wanted at 10 AND picking OMP at 24) and Grant Williams, on that contract, is very good value too.
I don’t know what moratorium you are talking about but today is Thursday and hopefully decisions will be made. So far we signed Melo but may have missed out on Miles. So I see that as a sad tie. Hopefully something will break our way to break the tie.
I’ve got to start reading more of your posts. This is the most strategic insight offered in days and in a couple hundred posts. You are right! It’s a poker game now and PJ over played his hand. Does he suck it up and sign or does he try to save face and force us into something? Miles will certainly over shadow him next year so that qualifying offer might not be the same powerful hammer it was for Miles.
Yeah that is were things stand in a mediocre free agent market this year. Miles and PJ got reality checked and we still couldn’t close the deal. Some compromise would be nice but I can never advocate against trying to get paid. That would be anti-capitalism. As far as I can tell the front office is paralyzed but I am not sure why. Hopefully a grand plan is in play.
Not yet. But if I had my money on the line, I would fight MJ tooth and nail (behind the scenes) to assert my dominance. (If I were MJ I would fight back just as hard). I am sure that the top of the new ownership group is guarding their interests. You don’t become as financially successful as them by being a punk @ss and waiting for the dust to settle.
I wonder if more rfa who aren’t rookie max deals like melo after seeing massive overpays is the first days of free agency don’t punt the last year to become ufa the following year
I said going into this that I thought Miles would take a one year deal. It benefits him to bet on himself.
It also benefits the team. Let another team overpay for him next year, because I’d bet this ownership group is ready and willing to move on past this era/saga.
Anyways, back to the reality that the new ownership seems to be preparing cap space to potentially spend next off season on this very good free agent crop.
Karl Anthony Towns expires after this season, I believe.
I’d love more than anything to instead of shoveling money to PJ and Miles, to instead pay KAT. And, Gordon Hayward’s 30m will come off the books after this year too.
Will it be costly? Hell yeah. Pairing KAT with Melo? Uh, hell yes.
