Draft Prospects 2021

This sounds like the typical pre draft rumor of the Hornets with an ACC player going to us

We worked out Moody today, among others.

When Sharpe pulled out of the Combine and team interviews I wondered if someone had made promises to draft him. I wasn’t thinking it would be as high as number 11, but it may be a high pick for him to drop the opportunity to showcase what he has. I didn’t watch too much UNC basketball last year, but from what I did I didn’t see someone that would be drafted 11th or higher…

My thoughts on players within a rough version of the &
@Eastley format:

My ā€˜I love this pick’ group:

  1. Wagner.
I really like him. Very good, multipositional defender. Point forward facilitator. Great team first player who makes everyone around him better. Questionable ceiling as a scorer/shooter but he’s an efficient, low usage good 3rd or great 4th option. My clear #1 though I do recognise others have a higher ceiling.

  2. Bouknight.
He’s a scorer and, a better than his stats indicate, outside shooter. He can be an offensive spark plug from the 2. Questionable D but if he buys in can be an acceptable team defender. Lower floor, higher ceiling than my other 3 in this tier.

  3. Moody.
Much like Wagner, you can question his ceiling a little but he is a great team player. Ideal 3&D wing who has good size, great length and a nice, smooth shot. Not a great athlete but he’s good at what he does. Can play either wing spot and can guard 1-4. Safe pick who would be a great fit on our roster.

  4. Springer
I really like his game. Ideal 6th man who can facilitate, shoot & defend at a good level. Just does everything well and keeps rising on my board as a result. Can play SG next to Ball and then run the second unit from the PG spot. Plenty of growth potential.

My ā€˜ok, but I’m nervous about this pick’ group

  1. Ziaire
Stanford stats say he’s a second rounder. Skill set and high school says top half of lottery. Really tough to grade him. Highly intelligent.

  2. Keon
If he had a better shot he’d be gone in the top 8. It’s all about developing his shooting. Elite level athlete. High energy defender. If you draft him he spends the year in Greensboro. High upside, high risk pick.

  3. Jalen Johnson
Character questions. That’s it. If he passes that test he jumps into my top tier. You can close a game with Miles, Jalen & PJ switching between forward & small-ball-centre positions. He has the size and skill-set to be a player in the league. Rebounds, blocks, steals and he can score.

  4. Sengun
Old school, back to the basket game. Excellent, point-centre facilitator. What are his measurements? Can he defend on the perimeter? If he can then he’s my #1 pick as his 80% free throw shooting indicates he ought to be able to shoot respectively from 3. Terrified if we pick him, terrified if we pass on him.

My ā€˜I like them in the mid to late teens group’

  1. Isaiah Jackson.
Elite athlete and rim protector who rebounds the ball … plus he’s young, long and can hit free throws. Aside from no indication of what he can do from 3 and the need to pack on good weight, he’s what we’re crying out for. I’d take him ahead of Kai Jones without hesitation.

  2. Kispert
You don’t draft older players in the lottery. But he can play either wing spot and is pretty much a 50/40/90 shooter. Not long, just an ok athlete, decent team defender. He is what he is and should have a long career as a 7th/8th man sharpshooter on a good team.

  3. Kai
We’d have to teach him how to play the game and he seems to lack instinct on D but he has athleticism you simply cannot teach. What worries me the most are his relatively low block numbers for someone so springy.

  4. Giddey
Can he defend any position on the floor? Can he shoot the 3 to a near acceptable level? He has Ball like vision and passing ability with good height and is young. He could be a player but needs to develop his shot and athleticism. Poor fit on our roster.

  5. Queta
Good post game and can pass out of it well. Blocks & rebounds well. We need a 7ft C on our roster and while he may not be able to defend or shoot well from the perimeter, he can do a job for us.

Arkansas product Moses Moody said he had an individual workout with the #Hornets today filled with a lot of conditioning and shooting. He thinks he is ā€œan ideal candidateā€ for their position-less approach and would fit in well alongside LaMelo and the rest of their young core.

after complete positionless Barnes in top 6, a next 5 multi positions list…
Moody, Keon
Wagner, Jalen Johnson
point forward Giddey in mix somewhere

love this list! I would probably move bouk down into tier two, but man I really hope we end up franz/moody/springer. All three bring something different defensively, but at potentially high levels. I see wagner as a big wing more than a front court player, so I like his fit on the roster. A smart connector with good shooting potential, elite off ball defense and good on ball defense would be SO good for this team from the wing (when gordon is sitting, injured or in the future). He’s been gradually moving past moody and springer in my mind

I think Springer is highly likely to be there for us, as he seems to be a boarder line lottery pick on most mocks I’ve seen, and I’d be very happy with him at 11.

We’ll likely also have either Bouknight or Moody to choose from too. Well, that’s my guess anyway.

We are working out a group today that includes Kispert and Sengun

I don’t know how many of you follow the Tier model for drafting but I do like the premise. It gets away from the goofy BPA-only approach which is never, ever actually Best, it always has shades of fit. So for me, the tiers are great.

Now what’s more subject is the actual who that’s in each tier. Seems like Chad Ford has done a lot of FO inquiries to get a consensus. I don’t know that anyone else is basing theirs off of FO consensus tier placement.

I don’t think we have any shot at Tier 1 or 2 guys but depends on whom you ask.

Chad Ford
T3 starts around pick 7
Bouknight
Giddey
Mitchell
Wagner
K. Johnson (apparently he might be slipping after workouts)
Sengun (borderline T4)
T4:
Zaire Williams (and rising)
Cam Thomas
Day’ron Sharpe
(Looks like he has Moody, Garuba, Kispert all solidly in the T4 range but don’t recall from the latest pod w/ Tony Jones)

theboxand1 has one oddity in T2 with Usman Garuba.
T3:
K Johnson
Bouknight
Sengun
T4:
Butler
Moody

Vecenie via the Athletic:
T1-3 ends at pick 6, Scottie Barnes
T4 runs from pick 7 to pick 22 and notables left out of T3/4 are:
Cooper, J. Johnson, I Jackson

Tankathon (which looks strange at best):
T2 has both Sengun and J. Johnson in it
T3 is only Giddey and Kuminga
T* is everyone else

Isn’t this the guy who said Charlotte is 100% not drafting LaMelo like 1 hour before the draft

Chad Ford said the same in his last pod with Tony Jones. He said it stunned him to be hearing it from many FOs. Tony confirmed he heard the same about him in workouts iirc.

Sengun and Kispert in the building

Yes, and to be fair…, that info was fed to him to throw off a team trading up

Truth

Founding, on the topic, I have a question I’ve been curious about for some time. You may or may not know the answer, I’m just curious if anything. During the last draft cycle, EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE said Charlotte was crazy about Wiseman. It was almost like the worst kept secret in the NBA. It was said we liked him to the point that we strongly considered trying to trade to the #1 overall pick to draft him. However, I specifically remember on draft day last year the narrative shifted there some. Some of the most reputable insiders, I remember Marc Stein being one, said we did want to move up, but not for Wiseman. Stein and others said LaMelo was our target in the event of a trade up.

So what was the deal, do we know? Did we pull off the greatest smokescreen of all time or was maybe Stein being fed false info? That would be odd because he’s usually one of the absolute best.

Not that this matters much, I think we’re all beyond happy with the way things turned out. But if LaMelo was our guy the whole time it would give me a bit more faith in our scouting dept.

I was big on the wiseman train. That was the word all through the org.

You saw this year that we missed what…?

A Center

They were big in Wise

Still are

Kid will be very good

We got lucky… the smokescreen of not taking Melo one hour before draft was due to the trade we proposed that was declined by GS. We knew we were not getting Wise… we did not want the Minny kid and we wanted Melo after as our definite #2.

Make sense?

It does, appreciate that.

Word

Go Hornets! 29 friggin Characters

I figured it out, I cracked our tell. We get siblings of NBA players: Cody Zeller, Lamelo Ball, Jalen McDaniels, the Martins, Willy Hernangomez.

… with the 11th pick, in the 2021 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Hornets select… Mo Wagner’s brother

Founding: any rumblings, whispers etc of the hornets trying to trade out of the draft for a vet?
Or do you get the sense they will definitely be looking to add rookies.

Have not heard much.

I think there is a big push to be a top 4 team in East. With that being said, will be tough to get much for the 11th. Unless you say a Myles Turner play, I expect us to keep the pick or even move back.
