2024 NBA Draft odds: How tiebreakers work

If multiple lottery teams finish the same record, all their draft lottery combinations get added together, then split between them evenly. If the number is odd and cannot be evenly split between the teams, the draw is used to decide the order to distribute the remaining combination(s).

The lottery is only used to determine the first four draft positions. After that, the remaining teams simply get slotted in reverse order of their record, starting in the fifth spot. If teams with better records leapfrog other teams into the top four, it can push some teams down to fifth or lower. In that scenario, just like with the non-lottery teams, the draw will decide the draft order of those tied teams.

The NBA’s tiebreaker draw also applies to all teams for the second round, where teams revert to the reverse order of their record (regardless of lottery results). For example, if the seventh-place team leapfrogs to the number one pick overall, they will return to their normal position of seventh in the second round.

Wait what??? Its not a coinflip?

I think it should be a play out game between port and Charlotte. Winner gets the third slot

I could have sworn that we had a coinflip this this draft lottery odds era

Yeah I have no idea anymore. Just last year the Rockets won a coinflip with the spurs for 2nd best odds. So there is definitely some sort of coinflip

You’re right, it was a coin flip before, guess they’re changing it to ping pong balls everywhere going forward.

Later this week, the NBA will hold an untelevised drawing to decide the order of any tied teams for draft purposes, then announce it on social media. They used to have a coin flip; now they use ping-pong balls. The result of the drawing will be used in the following ways:

  1. Of the 1,000 usable ping-pong ball combinations for the draft lottery, Portland and Charlotte will theoretically each get 13.25% of the combinations. However, the combinations don’t split evenly; there will be one extra ping-pong ball to assign. The winner of the draw gets that ball, and will have a slightly higher percentage of gaining a top pick.
  2. If both Portland and Charlotte are not picked in the lottery, and therefore fall out of the top 4, the NBA’s draw will decide the order in which the teams are slotted.
  3. The NBA’s draw will be used to decide the order of Portland and Charlotte in the second round. That round uses reverse order of record, so the two teams will reside in the 3rd and 4th slots, regardless of their first round positions.

For example, let’s see what happens if Portland wins the draw with Charlotte, which means they receive one more ping-pong ball combination.

  1. Portland will have a 13.3% chance of the top pick, and Charlotte will have a 13.2% chance.
  2. If, in the lottery, two teams leapfrog them into the top 4 picks (pushing Portland/Charlotte out of the lottery spots), The Blazers would pick fifth, and the Hornets sixth.
  3. In the second round, regardless of the lottery result, Portland would pick third in the second round (33rd overall), and Charlotte fourth (34th).

Cleveland’s fans are pissed and rightfully so. I love it
